Farber Research Institute scientist Dr. Paul Steiner has developed a means to transport matter from one place to another. With his assistant Dr. Christopher Mitchell, he has built a laser system that can project inanimate objects. Every time he attempts to transmit living subjects, the organism dies. He enlists the aid of pathologist Dr. Patricia Hill to examine the test animals and determine what is causing their deaths. Seeing what happens when Steiner disintegrates and then reassembles her wristwatch, she mentions that it looks like a polarity issue. They immediately make some modifications and successfully project a monkey. But Farber's director Dr. Blanchard is being blackmailed by a Mr. Latham, who wants credit for the discovery. Latham forces a demonstration of the machine, sabotaging the equipment with acid burns on some wiring beforehand, so it will fail. Then Blanchard can kill the project and Latham can appropriate the technique for his "discovery". Steiner makes a second attempt at a demonstration with help from Sheila, his secretary. He hopes to project himself into Blanchard's home where Latham is staying. Sheila is unfamiliar with its operation and, under pressure of discovery, accidentally sends Steiner to the wrong destination - a construction site. Worse, half of his body is badly disfigured. It is lethal to anyone who touches it - the victim is immediately electrocuted. Steiner then starts on a rampage of revenge and a search for a supply of the energy his body now needs.—Garon Smith
