Imagine I'm Beautiful (2014)

Action, Drama
Natalie Knepp, Alexandra Turshen
Lana arrives at Kate's nice second-floor Brooklyn apartment carrying a suitcase with wheels. Since her boyfriend Geoff has moved out, Kate wants to use her former office as a bedroom for another roommate. Lana, a beautiful young woman who seems quite naive and cheerful, explains that she is from Utah, has no job yet, and has always wanted to live in the city. Kate is more cynical and knows what to expect. Both women ask the other "Are you a serial killer?" Making sure that is not the case seems to be the only requirement for both, and Kate moves in.Lana starts interviewing for waitress jobs. At the first place, she meets Natasha, who is nice but seems capable of handling herself. For some reason, Lana decides not to interview for the job Natasha wants, but they agree to go out later to have a good time.Nothing was said about how to dress, but Lana dresses up and puts on so much makeup she looks like a hooker. And when she arrives where Natasha said to meet, it looks like the type of place hookers would pick up johns. Natasha is late, but when she finally arrives, Natasha kisses a man and they leave together. Lana kisses the bouncer, and she goes back to her apartment at 7 the next morning.Kate spends a lot of time alone in her bedroom listening to loud depressing music, drinking and apparently doing drugs. She doesn't have a job. Lana is concerned about her. Joe the Super knocks on the door after someone complains about the music. He seems nice and is obviously from another country.Lana also is concerned about Natasha so she calls and Natasha comes over, drunk. By mistake she goes in Kate's bedroom, where Kate is cutting herself. Kate demands Natasha leave, but Lana says it's her apartment too. Then Natasha makes a remark about Kate's behavior and Lana throws her out. Lana explains that her mother committed suicide and she is concerned about Kate. When Lana finds Kate passed out, she puts Kate in bed and discovers her photographs. Later Kate says she was a professional photographer but her camera is broken. She also worked as a financial consultant but hated that so she quit.Kata and Lana spend time together and enjoy each other's company. Lana has a favorite park near one of the major bridges. Kate reveals that she had a a miscarriage (the pregnancy was unplanned) and has been very upset about that, and her inability to get past this played a role in getting Geoff to leave. After Kate gets a job, she gets Kate's camera fixed and encourages Kate to resume her photography career. Kate doesn't do that, but her former boss in finance is willing to take her back.Kate also encourages Geoff to come back and tries to fix the relationship. Meanwhile, the women meet Massi, who lives upstairs. Kate has been complaining about the noise he makes, but he is nice. Apparently from another country, he is in the wine business. Lana wants to start a relationship with him, but she doesn't want to keep Kate from being able to do the same if that's what she wants.Kate and Geoff get back together, but Kate does not want to have sex. Lana has the solution. Lana will provide sex so Geoff won't find another woman and he can stay with Kate and be patient for as long as she needs. When the four are together, Lana confesses what she has done, making it sound natural and normal. Massi threatens Geoff so he has to leave. Kate gets very angry. Eventually, though, Kate and Lana make up.While in the park, Kate thinks she sees Lana. It is Dorothy, Lana's mother, who when she hears Lana's name wants to know if Kate knows what happened to her daughter who ran away. Lana actually lived in New York City. Kate takes Dorothy back to the apartment and demands Lana tell her the truth. At this point, two entirely different scenes include both Dorothy and Lana. The audience goes back and forth between the apartment and a scene where Dr. Whitaker is telling Lana she needs help and perhaps checking into a hospital of some kind will help her. In the apartment, Lana's question "Do you think I'm beautiful?" finally gives a reason for the film's title, though it has been suggested before Lana feels insecure about her appearance. In the other scene, Lana agrees to be treated but the next scene is a repeat of how the movie began.
