Complicit (2017)

Action, Documentary

The scene opens in remote Huaihua, China with the funeral of a young worker. The film opens with expansive scenes of beautiful landscapes in a remote area of Hunan province, a historical region renowned for its "floating mountains".26 year old Yi Long worked for Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier in China, making Apple desktop computers. He has just passed away from leukemia. The funeral is a traditional Chinese event that most Western audiences will have never seen before. Ancient hexagrams formed in rice are placed in the grave-site, the I Ching is referenced, there's a ritual sacrifice of a rooster, and segregation of men and women. Yi Long's female relatives do not accompany the funeral party to the grave-site as part of a long-standing rural tradition. Interspersed with the funeral we hear the voice of Yi Long's mother and are introduced to our main character, Yi Yeting, an activist tirelessly devoting himself to helping the families of Foxconn workers with leukemia - contracted while working on electronics for export. Yi himself suffers from leukemia - from making the shipping containers which deliver the devices into the West. He now advocates for electronics workers petitioning their employers for medical benefits.Post funeral, Yi Yeting interviews Yi Long's mother, who talks about his job at Foxconn on the Apple assembly line and her belief that he contracted leukemia from being exposed to many toxic chemicals - which the factory does not tell workers they are handling.COMPLICIT reveals a widespread problem of chemically poisoned young Chinese workers, whose factories produced for major global electronics brands. Assisting them with their claims Yi emerges as a hero, teaching himself labor law and challenging both corrupt factories and a government crackdown in order to help fellow victims. Standing on the balcony of his office in Guangzhoulwith a beautifully lit night sky in the background, Yi says "I was poisoned at a shipping container factory; but later I met so many workers from the electronics industry who were also poisoned by benzene.""When I first got sick, I didn't want anyone to talk about my disease. I locked myself in the apartment. I lived like a mouse hiding in the dark. Gradually I realized I needed to stand up and weather the storm. I want to live. I want to be there for my family".Yi becomes the main thread connecting to each of the workers in the story. He meets Ming Peng and Xiao Ya and helps to motivate many of our characters to take action - despite the odds, who in turn become activists challenging the system. During the course of the film he discovers nearly 20 leukemia cases among former Apple workers and petitions the government to uncover additional evidence of benzene poisoning at Apple's main supplier, Foxconn. He holds meetings to educate the Foxconn families, empowering them to fight for compensation, while struggling to remain healthy despite his own advancing disease.Through Yi's journey, COMPLICIT paints a human story of young workers' lives, why they left their villages for factory life, how they discover that their illnesses are work-related, and their widely varying responses to their predicaments. Through real time photography local advocacy organizations for disabled workers are shut down by the Chinese government, their offices trashed and leases canceled. Yi connects to a growing movement outside China and despite the government's efforts to isolate him he grows inspired to continue to build a movement within China. The film ends on a hopeful note that change is possible.
