Two grown children, a paid-off home and a well-ordered life - the Hamburg aquarium director Georg Lehnert and his wife Doris can be happy with themselves. But instead of re-creating their regained togetherness as well-off best-agers, the two are faced with separation because Georg is having an affair. The fact that he sees the much younger zoology doctoral student Laura as nothing less than "the" woman of his life hurts Doris particularly badly. To calm his conscience, Georg undergoes separation therapy. Every week he examines the causes of the relationship breakdown in a three-way conversation with Doris and the therapist Gisela Bruhns. Unfortunately, he lacks the necessary sensitivity and so the abandoned woman soon retaliates with drastic measures. While the separation dispute has a negative impact on Georg's new relationship, Doris finds new energy and professional plans after a painful start-up phase. Georg doesn't really like the fact that his wife is thriving without him - especially since he has to realize that there is no perspective with Laura.
